Although Hawaii is generally considered to be the birthplace of surfing, the people of the South Pacific have been surfing for generations. It was in Tahiti, in fact, that the explorer Captain James Cook first saw wave riders, years before he made it to Hawaii.
Over the decades the South Pacific region has turned into a proving ground of sorts for all manner of wave riding. Big wave and tow-in surfing that was pioneered in Hawaii and the west coast of the U.S. has been pushed way beyond what anyone thought was possible in spots like Teahupoo and other breaks in Tahiti.
A surf trip to the South pacific Islands nets more than just great surf though. Combined with the surf potential and the abundance of wildlife, places like the Galapagos Islands offer the opportunity to experience things never before imagined. SURFER magazine editor Sam George once stated that "taking a trip to the Galapagos and not going ashore to see the wildlife is like flying to Hawaii and not surfing!" Truly a one of a kind experience.
