The Mentawais

We know the names, G-land, Uluwatu, Padang Padang. We've all heard the stories, seen the pictures and if we're fortunate enough, maybe we've even had the chance to surf here. Straddling the equator, the major surf destinations in the Indian Ocean are both wave rich and tropical. For most traveling surfers those two factors alone are enough to drop the credit card on the airline counter and hop on the jet. However, before you plan a trip to this region there are some important things you must remember.

A high risk of terrorism targeted at foreigners, westerners specifically, is prevalent in many parts of this region and are focused in areas that are frequented by tourists. Areas throughout Indonesia require extra caution if you choose to travel there. If you're planning travel to anywhere in the Indian Ocean region it is highly recommended that you contact your foreign embassy for the latest news and updates on the area you're traveling to. On the upside, if you're cautious and travel smart a trip through Indo could be the surf adventure of a lifetime.
