The Land of the Rising Sun generally isn't the first place that comes to mind when you think about surfing. But believe it or not this area has a lot more to offer than just Hondas and headphones. During the last ten years or so surfing has exploded in this region, especially in Japan. July through October is typhoon season and when they show up they send giant freight-train swells barreling towards the Japanese coast.

A couple things to keep in mind if you're planning a surf trip in this area is to weigh the cost. Japan and a number of the areas in Asia that are prone to surf are not cheap to travel to and they're not cheap to travel in once you get there either. Although there are some areas where surf shops are prevalent it's a good idea stock up on the essentials before you head out to the break. Ding repair, wax and fin keys can be hard to come by when you get out to many of the surf spots. It's a good idea to keep in mind that although this region has incredible potential for surf the swells are not as consistent as many other areas so it's important to go at the right time.
